Red Alert 2 across a LAN

I was playing around with my home network setup this morning and I discovered a cool trick. Red Alert 2 can easily be configured to use IPX network protocol for a networked game. I am currently running Windows XP with ICS, so this trick may not work for everyone. First, I installed the IPX protocol on both machines. What you do on XP is go to Network Connections, right click on your Ethernet card and go to “Properties.” Under Properties click “Install…” For me, the IPX protocol appeared right in this window. If it doesn’t for you, I heard that selected “Microsoft” will cause an IPX protocol driver to appear. Use this. Make sure that NetBIOS and IPX is bound only to your network card. If NetBIOS is bound to the other adapters, this is okay. Next, boot Red Alert 2 on both computers after the protocol is installed. Go to Options/Network. Play around with your network setting on both computers until you can get them to appear simultaneously in the Lobby. Once you have done that, you are set. I hope this works! Enjoy.

in options under networking it gives you a choice of hardware addresses. look under the status>advanced (i think) in Winxp for ur hardware’s physical address. then you can just select it using that instead of “playing around w/ it”

I connected each of my computers thru an SMC router… I can’t seem to find both computers on the network. I tried the IPX/SPX setting in windoze XP and that didn’t seem to remedy my problem… (W)ould it m(A)ke a diffe(RE)nce if I don’t have the original cd(Z)? Thanks for the reply!

Yeah it’s probably a glitch in your version of RA2. I really don’t know anything about SMC routers so I can’t help you there. Sorry.

Red Alert 2 should work fine if you just run the installer on the CD. Otherwise I’m not sure what the problem is.

I made it work on XP: I looked at options -> network and the network card option there, and noticed it was set to the same value on both computers.

Changing the value on one of the computers (I had the choice of three different ones on the drop-down menu) did the trick!

Mike Steinbaugh
(5 years, 7 months ago)

Yep same for me. I think it works fine as long as one of the IPX numbers on the network is different. Trial and error will eventually do the trick.

(5 years, 7 months ago)

It’s quite easy, basically the network settings define the different adapters in your machine, and are listed by there mac address, find the mac address of your network card, and you’re set.

hmm, got to the part where i was playing around with the ipx setting ingame.

i practically tried every single option there was…

which was tireing since he had 5 drop down options, and i had three.

stranger still, there were times when he could see me in hte players list, but i cannot see him, or we can see each other, but i cant see a **** thing hes typing…

this is getting real confusing…

the firewall my school has should not make a diffrence, yeah? i mean, ive played ard with the IP in diablo 2…

ok do I have to buy 2 copies of ra2 to be able to play head to head on my network? Or can I just use the allies cd in 1 and the soviet cd in the other?

Mike Steinbaugh
(5 years, 7 months ago)

Yes using the cds separately will work and I think is okay with Westwood Studios. Otherwise why give out two cds that work?

Eivind
(5 years, 7 months ago)

If you start a command prompt and type in

ipconfig /all

you will get an overview of all network connections and their hardware addresses. This may help you choose the right one if you’re having problems.

For some reason when I try and play RA2 on a LAN, it doesn’t work. I have an XP Pro machine trying to play with 4 other 2K machines. I checked the MAC addresses, and the network ID’s in IPX/SPX Config, and they all work. For some reason the other machines can see me that is my nick is broadcast and shows up in the room, but I can’t see any games, nor can anyone see my games. I can’t see anyone else, nor can we chat (either way), but I do show up in the room. I’ve tried switching network cards but now I am out of ideas, anyone else have some?

Mike Steinbaugh
(5 years, 6 months ago)

I would say yes try uninstalling then do a reinstall. Delete anything that is left over from the Red Alert 2 in the Westwood folder (default location is C:\Westwood). Just be sure not to delete any of the Westwood Internet components for other games, such as Tiberian Sun, etc.

Try to patch the game without using the online updater since that might be your problem. You can download the Patch for Red Alert 2 1.006 directly from Westwood Studios. See if that works.

Pooka
(5 years, 6 months ago)

Guyz and Mike… I just had window xp installed on my system. RA2 installs but has errors that tell me that I need a new patch in order for it work over the internet. I try to install the patch but another error pops telling me that one of the files is old and that the patch cannot continue! The error: intializing failed, reinstall - appears after I try to run RA2 after the installation of the patch fails. Do I unistall RA2 then install the patch and then reinstall RA2? Westwood has not helped much.

I have two XP Pro machines networked. A network game shows both players in the lobby, however neither can type to each other, and when one player clicks the “New” button to start a new game, the other player loses that name in the lobby. Thus that player cannot see my game being set up, and cannot join. Note: I have not figured out which address to place in the “Destination Network” box for each computer, if it is needed. Nor have I chosen the “Socket Number” I don’t know what to put in those two boxes. I have chosen their correct “Network Cards” I use a Linksys Network Everywhere router with its own firewall. Do I need to make an entry into “Port Number”? My guess was no cause I see the other players name, just can’t play him.

Quite the LAN Question, so only the experienced need reply please.

I’m heavy into LAN Gaming, as well as played TONS on WOL. We’ve played everything from Command & Conquer games to Unreal to dinky but fun games like “Serious Sam” (LOL..cool game). However, the only game I’ve EVER experienced problems with is C&C: Red Alert 2.

I understand for RA2 LAN play, the IPX/SPX protocol needs to be installed, and they are on every computer I setup. (Yes, NetBIOS as well) I’ve set the IP Address for TCP/IP to letting it Automatically obtain, I’ve tried it with all Firewalls disabled, I’ve tried it with them enabled (for those firewall questions, you need to enable Ports 1234, 1235, 1236, & 1237 in your firewall to allow RA2 LAN play). I’ve turned off filtering on Routers, turned off Router Firewalls, used them all enabled using different ports. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled Clients, Services, and Protocols across the LAN just to get these friggin’ machines seeing each other in the RA2 Network Lobby.

It’s not the network media, as I can successfully ping each machine. It’s not the workgroups or any naming conventions. It’s not firewalls. I run C&C: Generals and everyone shows up automatically! Unreal Tournament, not a problem. Serious Sam, BOOM…beautiful. SWAT3, up and running. But for the life of me Red Alert 2 is quickly becoming my “Pet Peeve”. Sometimes, and these occasions are rare, several computers will “see” each other in the RA2 Network Lobby. But I’ve yet to get ALL computers on the LAN to “see” each other. More times than not, I don’t get anything at all out of that game.

I’m getting sick of Generals really quick because I’m getting killed at it. Man I’m a n00b at that game. I want RA2 across the LAN cuz I own at it. (I guess I can’t have my cake and eat it too huh?)

If anyone has any experience in getting RA2 to run perfectly across a LAN, on XP Machines all the way across the board, please please please let me know. Today is the 29th of March and a response today would be great, however unlikely.

If you have any ideas I can try, let me know. Keep in mind I’ve tried almost EVERYTHING!!!! Even somethings I haven’t listed here. But I am way open to any possible suggestion. Don’t worry about sounding condescending or very knowledgeable, I’ll understand ya’.

If someone could be my Savior, I’ll kiss yer feet!!!

I am wondering why I can’t get any names to show up…I’m trying to get a Windows 98 and XP computer with IPX and NetBios all enabled, and shared folders and other networked games work, so it’s set up right…but can somebody PLEASE tell me how to get some names to show up on the server find screen?

Mike Steinbaugh

The only way I could get it to work was by playing with the IPX settings in Red Alert. Just try changes the numbers around until the names appear.

Matrix
(5 years, 6 months ago)

I got it to work with WinXP & Win98 Machines.

For windows xp, install the NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible protocol. Once finished, select properties on NWLink IPX/SPX Compatible protocol and give it a network number of: 00000001 and Frame type = Ethernet II

For Windows 98 install the normal ipx/spx protocol. Once finished select the ipx/spx protocol, hit advanced, goto advanced tab, in here make sure frame type = Ethernet II and network address = 1.

Now in the network options of RA2 make sure the correct MAC address of your network adapter is selected for the “network card” drop down menu.

That should do it!

Wenton Chan

Just got CC RA2 RedStrike Yesterday; I’m pretty much in the “can’t get the **** thing to network” camp. I mean, even StarCraft is hella easy to network, and supports both UDP (TCP/IP) and IPX networks; RA2 seems to support neither, heh. I have a Netgear MR814 wireless router, and it only uses the TCP/IP protocol.

Even more “funny” I have a print server that uses the IPX protocol; I can print with this print server, and thus know atleast the IPX setup is correct. Cripes, anyone know of any patches or anything to fix this? I mean SC is 5 years old and they still release patches; Westwood seemingly dropped support for RA2 around 2001 or thereabouts.

Appreciate any replies.

Eric
(5 years, 6 months ago)

guys, when you set up the ipx on the computers, you need to set them to be 802.3 and give each computer an address. Both of these are done in the settings for the ipx protocol. give one the address 1 and the other 2. Make the network number 0, then everything will work. I had this same problem

WB
(5 years, 5 months ago)

We had it working and then it suddenly stopped. I play with all the recomended settings and sometimes we see some names sometimes we dont. very odd.

WB
(5 years, 5 months ago)

I FIGURED IT OUT!

I have this working with XP and 98 together on my collge LAN. We can get many people connected and chatting and everything.

You may need to:

If you have MS proxy client or others, disable them. Other internet programs may effect the game. Be safe and close all or disable internet programs.

if under network connections under xp you have more then one icon, you need to either bridge, remove or disable.

Everybody needs

  1. add ipx/spx or nwlink ipx to whatever OS you use.
  2. Find your hardware/mac address for your nic–run “cmd” then “ipconfig /all” for XP or “winipcfg” for 98.
  3. Open your IPX/SPX properties and set your network address to another number for each computer. For example “00000002″ for computer A. B would get 00000003 and c would get 00000004 and so on.
  4. Open ra2 go to options then network. Make sure the numbers here match your hardware address.
  5. play the game.

By looking at this you can see how some got it to work, but I am 100% sure this works. Try it out and e-mail me. Beesleyw at Thomas . edu

Yeah this site is really helpful thanks WB :). I could not for the life of me figure this problem out, and why the hell do 3 network addresses show up in RA2? Hardly no-one is really knowledgeable with IPX they should have used TCP/IP. Westwood have really slacked off since EA bought them out, they won’t even support RA2 anymore, it’s only 2-3 years old. Yeah, I hate EA.

Hi all,

I also have been trying to get RA2 networked for quite some time now. I am running two W2K PCs at home, with IPX protocol installed, I have verified the network works fine.

Now I have read through all the posting above and have tried several different combinations. But the following works for me:

In my IPX configuration, I set both the Internal Network Number to 0 (as in all zero). In Frame Type I have found that both 802.3 and 802 II works for me, as long as I have different Network Number on each machine (This is different to the Internal Network Number, you will be able to edit it one you select either 802.3 or 802 II from the drop down menu).

The conclusion is that I can get the two machines to see each other in RA2 and even start a game, but this is as far as I can go. The game will suddenly “ends”, as in the message “You are defeated” suddenly appear on the screen and the game is terminated. This always happens within 3 minutes of starting the network game.

The two PCs are connected via a switch, but after going through the manual (This is one of your cheapo switch) I can not find any configuration that I can tweak around, so I doubt this is the problem. However I have yet to try it with a simple hub.

Any ideas?? I am dying to have a go at it with my bro :P

You can’t play RA2 with out a CD. [removed]

For networking gaming. Make sure all computers involved are in the same network. For some machines (WinME is a good example) the name must be in the same case. This is tricky since in XP it defaults to upper case, but in ME it allows you to set it.

Also if you are running on XP. Make sure to install it using Compatability for Win 95/98 on the “autorun.exe” file. This will require for you to not let the game install on autorun from start.

I can get it to play on XP for the most part. But I get “internal error” every so often.

William L

I think the problem that I’ve been having is that with YR, you need to use two separate keys. I wasn’t aware of that beforehand. Umm… RA (the original) will run in Win2k if you set it to a compatibility mode, I think. I haven’t used Win2k in a long time, so I don’t even remember if it has compatibility modes or if that was new to XP. Then again, I can’t even get RA to install in XP without running it in a compatibility mode… Also, when I do get RA to work, I don’t even have a “network” option. Umm… I had something else to say, but I forgot what it was…

My Brother and I purchased RA2 to play over the internet, We both have winxp and cable modems.

his game installed and would link up with westwood servers right away.

Mine on the other hand will not. only differnce is I run my cable behind a linksys router BEFSR41 4 port router.

I am pretty sure it is the router stopping the game from contacting westwood but have no clue how to set the router to allow this to happen. It also effectively kills the internet connection when it fails and both the computer and the router has to be rebooted to re-establish the connection.

any help from someone that uses this successfully would be wonderful. strange i can play Everquest and Dark age of camelot with no problems at all.

My rd2 netqwork option aint working at at on my second comp (running ME) My 1st comp(win zp) can hosty a game and all but the 2nd one can even get in network menu , i click on the button and it tries to get in but comes back with the main menu.

FYI - If you connect your computers via a router, then you won’t be able to get RA2 (or any other IPX/SPX game) to see the other comps on your local network, because IPX is an unroutable protocol. Makes me absolutely crazy mad that these Westwood folks didn’t make RA2 playable over local TCP/IP — the same protocol that RA2 uses when it connects to Westwood online!

hi, i have 2 computer connected with a cross over cable. got win XP pro running on both and broadband on one (with ICS enabled) i had a big probelm getting RA2 to work on my network.i did manage to do it once but then i did something to my network settings and it all stopped working, file sharing, ICS, RA2 lan games etc. just got it all working again though. these are the settings i used. all from help other people on here.

install RA2 and the v1.006 patch. then install the NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS compatible Transport Protocol. when this has installed go on its properties and select the frame type. I set this to Ethernet II (after reading on the old westwood support site that this is what it needed to be set to) then i set the Network number to 22222222 (just 8 of the same number, originally 00000000). Leave the Internal network number as 00000000 and do exactly the same on the other computer (make sure that the Network number is the same on both computers, so inmy case it was 22222222 on both computers). now on RA2 click on options, network, then set the Network card address to the address that looks something like this: 22 22 22 22:** ** ** ** (where * is the address of your network card).leave all the other boxes empty. Do this on both computers and it should work?. it works for me, just hope it will help someone else out

Hi!

We set up a LAN together with a friend and decided to play Red Alert 2. First we tried with a laptop (Win ME) and a Celeron 400 (Win 98), with approximately following IPX settings: Frame type: Ethernet 802.3 IPX addresses 00 00 00 01 in the first and 00 00 00 02 in the second computer. The number of connections was set to 2.

We both have a retail copy of RA2 with same versions installed (updated to 1.006). Our network is pretty simple: two RJ45 serials and a hub. We also have a crossing cable. My friend also has “Yuri’s Revenge” expansion pack installed together with RA2 but I think that’s not the problem because..

..we were able to see each other in the network lobby. But then, while trying to type something the whole network starts to lag. The delay times increase from seconds to minutes and while trying to begin a game, the host manages to get to the game creation menu but the joiner will never be able to join (actually our patience ended after waiting for some ½ hour :)).

Then we tried with another laptop (now the network consists of two laptops, the new one running Win 2000 with its default IPX settings, the address 00 00 00 02). Now my friend from his Win ME-laptop is able to see me in the lobby but I can’t see him. There is slight lag, but not as bad as what it was between ME & 98 machines.

The problem with this alternative is that last time when we had a LAN party we were able to play with these two computers but now even that seems to be impossible :((

Could someone provide a bit of assistance to make it possible for us two generals to destroy & bomb each other :)

I’ve got RA2 runnning now with a sitecom router, 1 win98 en 1 winXP machine. just set network to 2222222 on both pc’s (like someone already said here), and set the IPX to ethernet II.

I click custom game or any other internet option and it says: “You Westwood online support library is either missing or invalid”

I installed the internet components again and I have the same files as my friend but I keep getting the message. I have v1.0.0.6

This may be a problem with it think I play over LAN but I do not, I want to play over the internet?

Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem please?

I Know there is a problem that allows u to play Red Alert 2 over TCP-ip over LAN. no more ixp problems! I have used on a LAN-party, where IPX was filtert from the backbone, so it was impossible to play RA2 the normal way. But I lost that program! Does anyone knows where iam talking about? I hope anyone knows where i can find it…

Ok, I’m at work trying to get all this to work. My partner in crime and I run through 2 different network closets. We’re both running XP.

Internal Network Number: 00000000 Frame Type: 802.3 Network Number: 11111111 (Comp 1) 33333333 (Comp 2)

What’s the problem here, we can’t see eachother in the lobby. In CC the Network cards are set to the correct one…can anyone help.

“FYI - If you connect your computers via a router, then you won’t be able to get RA2 (or any other IPX/SPX game) to see the other comps on your local network, because IPX is an unroutable protocol”

IPX is completely routable? Where do you get this info from? The network number represents what the network subnet does in TCP/IP. If IPX wasn’t routable how to you think Netware Networks worked before tcp/ip. Obviously you will need to enable IPX routing on the router to route it but no big deal. SPX makes IPX connection orientated like what TCP does for IP.

Cheers

I have Win XP on my main comp with an ISDN internet connection. My second comp has Win 98 but no internet.

How can i network both comps to play RA2 together on the internet sharing the same connection?

Help will really be appreciated.

Thanks for all the great postings.

Thanks to all for your helpful comments. What worked for me was setting the internal network number to something different on each computer. You can do that by right-clicking on the network, selecting Properties, etc. (see other comments). If the numbers are different for each computer, it works.

Had it working between WinXP Pro and Win 2000 Pro and then, suddenly, one day it died. By this, I mean it just stopped working. Through Windows, each machine can see the other, and access the other’s shared folders. But through RA2, it never lists the other player anymore.

This may have been due to a WinXP update… maybe one of the many “security updates” breaks it. I’m not sure. There had been no changes to my network setup that I had knowingly caused to happen.

Since then I put in a new HD, installed WinXP again, then SP2.. and oops, still nothing. I tried all of the fixes here with no luck, along with others found on the web. Now I find that MS’s web site has a list of games that are broken by SP2, among them RA2! Is it possible I’m out of luck?

If anyone has a tip for getting RA2 to work again with XP SP2, please let me know. I’m sure others will be in this boat too sooner or later with XP.

Thanks,

yoji

Alright i got it all up and running thanks to this site. Ill tell y’all how i fixed it.

The problem: I got two XP machines with two LEGAL copies of the game (costs around 10 Euro each in holland). I installed the game and tried to hook the PC’s up in the Network Lobby of RA2. I setted the card options on both pcs the right way by looking up its physical adress. (both pc’s networkcards). Butt when i came in the lobby i could the other and the other could see me. Butt one of the two hosted a game he/she disapeared from the lobby, so i couldn’t join the others game whatsoever.

The solution: I installed the IPX protocol already before i started networking on RA2. Butt now i had to configure the IPX protocol as i’ve read on this site. so i folowed cokecan72’s advice and that did the trick. I set the internal networknumber of both pcs to: 00000000 and the Frameset to Ethernet II. In the networknumber field i filled in: 22222222 on BOTH computers. So they got the same configuration in the IPX screen !!!!.

Now i restarted RA2. Whent to the internetscreen and downloaded the UPDATE 1.006 for BOTH PC’s. RA2 restarted itself and then you need to go to options > Network. remember ur the physycaladress from the network card? Ah well never mind cus is HAS to BE the one with 22222222:(physicaladrr.) In the other field fill in NOTHING AT ALL (notice the new Firewall option after downloading update)!!!

This time it works without the buildings blowing up saying “you where defeated” lik emanny people had. (i think thats a cause of a bad network connection between both pc’s)

i have the windows XP firewall still on and no ports opened! I also have a Router/Modem from Trust (if ur interested: the 445A- or 450I Speedlink XDSL WEB STATION)

Now it all works fine to me. I hope it does for urs too.

GOOD LUCK !!!!

well boys I have some ****in problem with RA2 and I tried so many options and now I’m in chess. So let me explay you the situation. In the beginning there are two users User1 & User2. Both have RA2 installed form different places. Now i download the game from User1, other 4-5 guys download from User2. and the situation… from tha 4-5 guys which downloaded from User 2 there are conflicts they can’t enter a game simultaniously.Well some could enter others not. cause it says “the serial is already in use” I have no conflicts with any of those 4-5 at all. bute they 2 or 3 between them there aren’t conflicts and the last have. If someone downloads the game from me I have conflict with him. So we can play max 3-4 players cause others can’t join it says “the serial is already in user”. The IPX protocol is installed. The mack adress from OPTONS NETWORK is seto to everybody right. We’ve got a lot of different ra2.reg files with different numbers in it and all numbers in the regedit serial are different. I have no idea what else can I try. I start to think that may be is the serial with which the game is installed but it makes no sence caus 2-3 players have downloaded from User 2 the game and have no conflicts. Any idea of this strange problem?

Network numbers for IPX shouldnt really matter much.. both of my machines used the default which was a whole bunch of zeros. Make sure you find your correct MAC address (in command prompt ipconfig /all) and set it in OPTIONS>NETWORK. After you have set that, i wouldnt mess around with the other choices in options unless you know what you are doing. [removed].

Check to all these steps, ALL are necesary to get lan RA2 working under xp: First of all turn your network adapters to 10 mbps Half duplex, then install ipx support under protocols, then unbind tcp/ip and make sure you have Client for microsoft windows, file and printer sharing for microsoft windows nwlink 4 netbios and ipx compatible etc etc etc. Disable firewall and get to the ipx protocol to configure with the following: on one of your computers, network address should be a number like 00000001 (when in the other computer you shuld use 00000002), beside frame, you should mark ethernet 802.2 and behind frame the network address should be something like 10000000 (when in the other pc we configure 20000000) and thats all the secret, it tooks me about 2 hours to get this riding but now is working (with a switch i gain a 3 player game or more)

Sebastian from Argentina

I can not reinstall RA2 on a computer using XP Home. It geas straight into wanting to send an erro message to MS.

We get an error message saying we are using the same serial number within our network on two other machines. We uninstalled and reinstalled but it still says this. We used regedit and deleted Westwood and it still came up after we installed. We use XP on one and 98 on the other.

We own three separate games and three separate serial numbers for each.

This is how I fixed it (yes, its an previous reply, but modified so it works):

  1. add ipx/spx or nwlink ipx to whatever OS you use.
  2. Find your hardware/mac address for your nic–run “cmd” then “ipconfig /all” for XP or “winipcfg” for 98.
  3. FIXED: Open your IPX/SPX properties and set your network address to THE SAME number for each computer. For example to “00000001″ for computer A. B would get 00000001 too and c would get 00000001 too and so on.
  4. Open ra2 go to options then network. Make sure the numbers here match your hardware address.
  5. play the game.

nblue_elf

hello, Bram, Netherlands and WB had it almost solved for me, and for those of you still having trouble this is how i solved it.

  1. Install and Patch RA2 1.006
  2. Open IPX properties on both computers (A & B)

A internal network number = 22222220 Frame type = Ethernet II Network Number = 00000002

B internal network number = 22222222 Frame type = Ethernet II Network Number = 00000003

  1. In RA2 Network Settings on both computers, make sure the address matches the new ones you made. This is the only field you have to make sure, it will be in the form xx:xx:xx:xx

You should now be able to chat in lobby. I did this on two computers running WINXP PRO, with ICS still running, legit copies of RA2 using the same CDKEY.

Luke

Okay, yesterday I reported that I was having problems with connecting over the Internet, I’ve sorted that now. We used Windows XP VPN settings to create a VLAN connection, we see eachother in the lobby but can’t join eachothers games. I’ll post back once I’ve fixed this

Zac

Finally got it working.

Playing Red Alert 2

PC 1 Internal Network Number - 22222222 Frame Type - Ethernet II Network Number 00000000

PC 2 Internal Network Number - 22222222 Frame Type - Ethernet II Network Number 00000001

On each computer, set the thing in the drop down box to whatever the Mac address of the relevant network adapter is. EG if you’re playing on your Local Area Connection, go to command prompt and type ipconfig/all and get the MAC address for your LAN and set it to the same in RA2 network options.

Do the same on both computers. Leave the other stuff in the network options blank.

You should now see the game. I disabled both firewalls on both computers when trying this, I don’t know if it works with the firewalls on.

Good luck everyone, I’d been trying to solve this for a long time and finally have success.

PS an easy way to set up a ‘LAN’ over the web is to use a program called Hamachi

http://www.hamachi.cc/

Zac

In my previous comment, I wrote

“On each computer, set the thing in the drop down box to whatever the Mac address of the relevant network adapter is.”

I meant the drop down box at the top, in RA2 Network Setup. There should be a number of different choices, chooose the one that looks similar to your MAC address (it might look like ‘xx xx xx: your mac address’).

I hope this helps.

could you explain the instrucion more simply to understand. I tried what you did but i can’t get things to work. My w2k and the other w2k can’t see each other even trying to play around with the network and i don’t know much about the hardware involved like installing the drives and stuff.

Whats Socket # and Destination Network mean in RA2.

Aequis
(2 years, 11 months ago)

I found RA2 a few days ago and wanted to play it with a friend. Unfortunately, like many here, we couldn’t see each other. I spent all night trying to figure out when I found a solution. It might not work for you guys, but try it anyways.

First, you need to make sure you have the IPX protocol installed on your connection:

  1. Go to the Control Panel.
  2. Open Network Connections.
  3. Right-click on your LAN connection and click on Properties.
  4. Check if NWLink NetBIOS and IPX/SPX/NETBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol are in the list.
  5. If not, you need to click on Install -> Protocol -> NetBIOS.

Now for my actual solution:

  1. Click on IPX/SPX/NETBIOS Compatible Transport Protocol in the Properties window of your LAN connection.
  2. Click on Properties.
  3. In the box next to Frame Type, select Ethernet 802.3, and in the box (beside Network Number) beneath it enter 12345678.

Rinse and repeat for all computers you want to play RA2 with.

Hopefully this will help some of you out.

Oh, and beware, there’s a chance you won’t be able to network a Windows XP/NT machine with a Win9x machine because they use different versions of the protocol.

If you use a router, you might need to configure it to allow NetBIOS traffic. I had to do the same with my router before I could get it to work.

Quick tip to add to teh above. I was was running to windows XP machines via a router (both latest 1.06 version) and couldn’t get them to talk to each other. The difference was that one had been upgraded with the latest update, the other hadn’t. When both were updated, voila! They worked first time. Check it out. Red Alert 2 Auto Update.

What if it says under “Network Card”, “IPX not available”? Then what do I do?

Dustonius Maximus

answer to above

Thnx to all on this forum, I succesfully played a wireless LAN game w/ my little bro today. Ive spent 4 days on and off trying to make it work right.

He’s got qwest DSL w/ a wireless gateway (actiontec modem; pretty common). He’s connected via USB port. I have a Blitzz Super G Wireless PCI card. Both pc’s are XP.

At first I got the “IPX not available” message too. So I decide to find out what an IPX is. I still don’t know :-) LOL! But I have an idea now. I installed the IPX/SPX protocol on both pc’s since it was the most common fix on here. That replaced “IPX not available” with various MAC addresses. Then I entered “ipconfig/all” from the command prompt (all programs/accessories) and used the “physical address” for the “network card” field in RA2’s network options. I was then able to see him in the lobby and chat too but, as soon as one of use tried to join a game, the joinee’s RA2 program only (not the CP) would freeze. I decided to reinstall RA2 with a different serial (you can find yourself) on one PC and applied the patch you can find in comment #24.

Tada! No problems from there on out. Whether it was the reinstall, the new serial #, or the patch is for you to find out but the IPX install and obtaining your MAC address is a must. And the rest of the IPX config is system specific. (routers, modems, etc.)

Good Luck to the next person!

Hey Peps does anyone know if its posible to link 2 seprate networks in difrent locations ie london & manchester as we can play red alert 2 ok here in office but can`t play work mates in manchester with out all of us using internet

Diaz, IT Tech&Engineer

How to get Red Alert 2 working on a LAN. (XP) (I found RA2 to be fun to troubleshoot, so heres my spill)

  1. Install IPX protocol, on the nextwork device that will allow networking. (anything from a crossover to a router to a switch to wireless everything will work) How to: start - settings - Network and dial up connections - right_click on the network device - properties. A new window will show up with a list of services and protocols. Click install and select add protocol. Select the NWlink IPX/(other protocols). Now select properties of this new protocol. Internal Network should be 00000000. Under frame type, select 802.3, or experiment with 802.2 or ether II. Change number to a unique network value on both computers. ex: computer1, 00000001. computer2, 00000002. Click ok.

  2. Find your MAC address: Start - Run - type ‘CMD’ - Command prompt appears. Type ‘ipconfig /all’ and the information of all network cards should scroll by. Find the network card you set up for IPX and note its MAC address. A MAC address looks like this: 00-1A-B4-A2-01-D1 (keep this for later)

  3. Configure RA2: Options - Network, select the same MAC address in the drop down menu as you took in note the first time. Leave everything else as default (empty). If this fails, try selecting different socket numbers.

  4. Re-install RA2: Only if nothing else works. That is a last resort, only if you have a software glitch somwhere that doesnt allow RA2 to recognise the new IPX configuration.

Any more problems feel free to email me. If you abuse of this privilege (spam, or weird emails), I will block you out.

Duffy:

You want to create a WAN. To do that you need to use an infrastructure that connects you to your ‘mates’. Unless you ran a cable to Manchester, you will need to use someone else’s. Using the internet is the esaiest solution. If you office has a WAN to Manchester, then you might might be in luck. IPX is a routable protocol which allows it to communicate with different networks. If configured properly, it IS possible. BUT, you need admin rights to disable firewall to the other network, also need to disable firewall from other network. ALSO, you need to configure your routers to HANDLE IPX, and ensure that they are running on RIP. Assuming you are part of the same domain, it doesnt mean you are part of the same network. In that instance you need to create a bridge connection on the Domain controler or a child domain with high admin rights, OR create a VPN. If you have access to the domain server, you can ‘hard-wire’ two networks together using the admin tools.

If your only solution is VPN (virtual private network) then you need to configure that on your routers. This involves configuring frame-relay with appropriate IP and subnet, proper encryption is optionnal. You then preferably should provide a routing table for your router for the frame-relay, as well as RIP. Once all this is configured, all you need to do is configure your computers to communicate over the VPN, which would mean disjoining the domain if you are part of one(admin rights) then either creating a workgroup or a new domain over VPN. Then its the simple task of matching the ip and ipx address and networks, and voila !

I couldn’t get RA2 to work on LAN i got the message “IPX NOT AVALIBLE” so after i asked some 1 to show me how to installed IPX on my network adapter. I did it for both the computers on my network. I am using 1 on a wireless adapter and the other using ethernet cable to connect it to my 4 port wireless G router. After the IPX not avaliable was replaced by about 5 MAC address’s on 1 PC and 3 on the other. I first tried it on network but they didn’t pick each other up so i changed the MAC address’s doing a trial and error tactic. On a combination of two 1 PC picked up the other but not the other way round. But when i made a game on the PC that could pick up both computers the other PC could pick up the game that i had made and was able to join. I don’t no why it didn’t pick up the other player but could pick up, join and play a game but it worked.

I’ve read every review and comment here. They have all been helpful and I have not tried anything today but I have an idea of what to do. The only thing I have done is:

Install IPX Set Stuff: 11111111 on both Computer 1: 00000001 Computer 2: 00000002

Set MAC Addresses, didn’t work. Going to reinstall when I get home.

I did following:

  1. Installed IPX
  2. Internal network number set different to all computers, 00000001, 000000002 etc
  3. Set Manual frame type detection - Ethernet 802.3 0000000
  4. Pointed right network MAC in the game (Network options)

Enjoy the game!

“Hamachi” (www.hamachi.cc) is a program that lets your create a “virtual” LAN, it can emulate IPX/SPX/NetBIOS over TCP/IP. Or in other words; yay! Red Alert 2 via Internet without Westwood servers! :)

Grab the program, read the guides (there are red alert 2-specific ones in the forums)

Step-by-Step to network connectivity: (I also had the “can see other player in lobby, but cannot join” problem).

Do this on all computers: Open the network properties and install the IPX/SPX/.. Protocol. On a command prompt, type ipconfig /all Find the network adapter you are using to play via lan, write down the MAC-Address (xx.xx.xx.xx)

In the game, under options, network, do the following: Select the previously found MAC-Address in the pull-down menu. Now RedAlert knows which network adapter to use. Next, enter a socket number. Enter the same value on every computer. For example, I used 12. In the “DESTINATION NETWORK” field, enter 00.00.00.00 on every computer. This last step is the one which solved my problem, and the value is right if you didn’t configure anything in your IPX-Protocol of Windows. Otherwise, check the IPX/SPX Protocol properties, there you find the “Internal Network Number”, default is 00000000 and must be the same on all computers. I wonder why RedAlert seems to be unable to use 00.00.00.00 by default.

I also set the game to “compatibility to win98″ under the properties of the desktop icon, but I think this is not necessary.

If you have the “everything explodes after 1 minute” problem or a message saying that the serial number is already in use, this indicates that the game at least thinks that you copied it. Reinstall it on every computer using different serial numbers.

I hope this solved some problems out there.

Red Alert Fan

  1. Install IPX Protocol.
  2. Internal network number - 000000XX “XX means choose different numbers on every machine.
  3. Frame Type - Ethernet 802.3
  4. Network Number - 00000000

In Red Alert Options:

  1. Network Card - Choose the one with the numbers XX. Excample: 000000XX : 000000000002
  2. Socket Number - 12
  3. 00.00.00.00

read these instructions on a website..posted by sum1 esle…hope this helps…..

post number 1 : posted by some ashly…..

I maintain a network at where i work and have experianced similar problems. but do not dispair for i have an answer… Make sure that the IPX protocol is installed under Win XP, then enter the game if you go to options and then Networking you will see at the top something that resembles a MAC address mad of about 10 pairs of 2Hexdecimal digits, the top one has mostly 00 00 00 00 00 00 at the end but the other 2 have 00 00 00 00 at the start chose either of the 2 which have 00 00 00 00 at the start and it should work if not use the other 1 of the 2. please E-mail me with other problems and to let me know when you have it working. Thanks Ashley

now try this…. posted by sum1 esle….worked fer me :)… hope this works for u as. i wont viste this site again…ever….coz.. u know…waz just browsing by… who knows…:) gluk..bye tc !

post 2 : If you install ipx on windows xp it will automatically assign a generic network number to that protocol of 0000000. The machines can’t have the same number or they won’t see each other and ipx games won’t work. Ashley above was somewhat correct in having you change optional other card addresses defined by red alert 2. But if you want to fix it all together, you need to go into your ipx settings under network connections in windows and just change each machine to a different number.. ie… 0000001 , 00000002, 0000003 and so on

Rudy
(2 years, 1 month ago)

you have to follow the guidelines of Hassan Asif, Red Alert Fan and Chris to successfully make a network, only on a side note, to confirm some confused ideas:

the “Destination network” should be identical (example: both shud be 00.00.00.00 )

and you shud put identical “socket numbers” for both pcs ( ex: 12 )

and for the network card: mine successfully work when i put for both of the two pcs the any of the options that start with “00 00 00 00: … “

PS: to install the IPX connection (i did this in my windows XP), you should rightclick on the “LAN connection” icon (in the ” my connections ” file) then click properties . then there you should click on ” install ” and click on “protocol” and then click on ” IPX/… ” and it will install in a few minutes.

Playing RA2 over LAN(Windows XP) is a nasty but not an impossible thing. If you follow the sequential stages you can succeed.

  1. Of course you must have a LAN connection :))
  2. In your device manager you must have only one network adapter installed. You must disable or uninstall other network adapters(such as bluetooth etc.)
  3. You must have Service Pack 2 installed in order to obtain the required protocols
  4. On your network connection screen, right click on your lan connection and click on properties. Then click on install button and under protocols field you must install all ipx protocols and “Microsoft TCP/IP protocol version 6″.
  5. Than install the game.
  6. In the game menu click on the options button and network button under the options. Here, you must select the ipx adress in such a way that both computers have the same last 4 digits in the ipx adresses. Try to select the ipx adresses different from 000000000002 if possible. example: ….. 4153
  7. Click okey and in the main game menu click on network.
  8. Setup a game and wait for the guest player to press Accept.
  9. If there is a red star beside all of the players’ names you are ready to go. have fun!

(Canada) Matrix. 2 Apr 2003.

Now in the network options of RA2 make sure the correct MAC address of your network adapter is selected for the “network card? drop down menu.

That should do it!

“Paul Mabbett. 1 Feb 2003.

Please simply tell me how to load and play RA2 under XP

It is to do with safedisk, download an updated safedisk driver for XP and it will then work. Had the same issue and it solved it for me.

I’m having exactly same problem as R-Scyth (comment #64). He said:

Hey, ive also been trying to get Ra2 and Yuris Revenge working over IPX for some time. But ive come across this really wierd problem.

I press on Network on the main menu, and on this screen is one button called NEW and a duplicate image of the radar at the top right. When you press on NEW it changes to JOIN and says “cant join game”, its like a glitch or something. So I cant even create a game for Kali to join.

Ive got legitimate versions, CD key, Box and all.

Got me stumped… Any ideas?

This is completely frying my brain… it’s as if part of the code is missing. Other than the problem outlined above I don’t seem to be having any connection problems. Both computers can be seen and chatting is possible. This happens for me in Red Alert and Yuri’s Revenge.

This makes me want to break something to go along with this seemingly broken game! Man, why do I get these ideas like “Hey, I think playing Red Alert over the network would be a great idea!” Now I’m stuck in RA2 network game hell.

First you must understand how IPX/SPX works. The network number is very important. Unless you are sending IPX packets through a router to a physically segregated network, all devices are on the same IPX network. The most important thing about protocols is that they must agree; protocols are rules for communication.

The following settings will work with XP machines on the same physical network. The network used in this session is not segregated by routers or bridges. I currently run it between an XP home and XP professional machine. Software and OS firewalls are turned off as that is taken care of by a PIX at the network frontend. Once all machines are talking the same, they will effectively communicate.

The frame type must be the same on all machines. Ethernet 802.3 is the native frame type for IPX/SPX. There is no need to change it as this has been the standard for 15+ years. The only reason to change would be if the router, bridge or device you were networking through would not support it.

Windows Network Adapter Settings: IPX Netbios: Installed, Enabled NWLink IPX/SPX protocol: Installed, Enabled. NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol Configuration Properties: Internal Network Number: 00000000 Adapter: Frame Type: Ethernet 802.3 Network Number: 00000000

Game Settings: Netwok Card: Select from the drop down list whichever MAC is associated with the network card you are using to connect with. If you know the last 4 of it, it should be easily found in the list. The second half of the MAC address is the serial number of the card and is unique. Socket Number: 1 (Same on all machines) Destination Network: 00.00.00.00 (Same number as used with network adapter IPX setting. This would also be the same as the machine hosting the game. If all machines use the same network settings they will connect fine.)

Please see previous postings about how to get your MAC address, change Windows network adapter settings etc… No reason to repost it.

Hope this helps others.

Hi all,

thank god for this info here! we’ve managed to run Red Alert II in a wireless network by using your info… what did we do: 1. install ipx protocol on wlan connection 2. changed the 8 zeros (00000000) in the properties field to: 0000000X (changed last number) 3. performed this action also on other notebook (use different number for each connection) 4. check out you Mac address in winXP (start > run > cmd, ipconfig /all) remember this. 5. start the game and go to: options > network - select your mac address here 6. start a game, you can test the settings by sending a chat from pc to pc, if both or more parties are no longer kicked from the connection you’ve solved the issue.

thanks and good luck

Hi!

I got a problem. I did the “12345678″ in the IPX option, but when we try with more than 3 PC’s, it says that we got the same serial. And I got a pirated version, so its kinda difficult to reinstall. How can I change it without reinstalling?

…so.. yeah… what can I do… I don’t think it’s got to do with the 00000001 thing, since we could see each-other on the network and even play… for like 5 min. :( Pls. help!!! Thx

For who wants to play Red Alert 2 on LAN network !! First : Get HamachiSetup-1.0.1.1-en , install and DO NOT UPDATE THAT PROGRAM , DEACTIVATE AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE !!! after you joined a network with your friend , go in my network connections click properties on your network connection and install NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios..bla..bla… by clicking install -> Protocol -> NWLink IPX/…bla..bla.. after you have installed IPX/SPX click properties on NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios… and set Internal Network Number 00000000 (full of 0 ) , Frame type : Ethernet 802.2 and Network Number : 00000001 , click OK then Close . Make the same thing on Hamachi connection. After you have done setting , restart your PC. Your friend(s) must make the same settings and join the same network on hamachi. Than run Hamachi (your friend(s) too) , run RedAlert2 and enjoy LAN playing. REMEMBER DO NOT UPDATE HAMACHI because only with this version you can play with that settings. For questions email : kristty_sonny@yahoo.com

Please do you know how to resolve “reconnection error” issue ? I am not a cheater but i often get this error when i play over hamachi (my only way to plat online). I have applied the new Ra2 UDP patch (the .dll). If a player gets “reconnection error” does it mean at 100% that he was the victim of a cheater or a cheat has been used by the opponent? please contact me on my email : w_zangar @ yahoo. fr (without space) “Red Alert 2 Forver !!!” “Life for Red alert 2 !!!” Thank You very much
