Comcast increases cable modem speed
5 Jan 2004
I got an e-mail from Comcast last week informing me that my cable Internet has doubled in speed from 1.5 Mbps to 3 Mbps. According to my results, Comcast is correct.
Speed Check Analysis
To test my cable modem’s speed, I pulled up broadbandreports.com, in my opinion the best broadband resource on the Internet. It has links to over 250 speed test servers.
| Download | Upload | Location | |
|---|---|---|---|
| All speeds are in kbps. Test was performed at 3 PM with normal Internet congestion. | |||
| Megapath | 3339 | 246 | West Coast |
| Linkline | 3380 | 229 | West Coast |
| Netaccess | 3344 | 255 | East Coast |
| Average | 3354 | 243 | N/A |
If you’re still using DSL, you really should switch. DSL speeds average around 800 kbps. Cable is now above 3 Mbps. In the San Francisco area, cable costs ten dollars a month more, but isn’t 2.2 Mbps extra speed worth it? I’ll post a speed test of Adelphia from my apartment connection near UCLA in Los Angeles at the end of the week. Right now, I can only verify that Comcast has doubled their connection speed.

That’s a pretty sweet table you did there!
I’m pretty much getting the same here in los angeles county.
Yep, good deal. Wish they’d work on the upload though. Oh well, can’t have everything. Though I wasn’t really happy when they cut off the cable to upgrade it right in the middle of downloading porn.
