(07-30) 11:50 PDT — Bill Walsh, the imaginative and charismatic coach who took over a downtrodden 49ers team and built one of the greatest franchises in NFL history, has died at the age of 75 after a long struggle with leukemia, it was announced today.

Texas prep star picks Michigan [∞]

For University of Michigan football fans who dread saying good-bye to senior tailback Mike Hart, here’s something to anticipate in 2008: The arrival of Texas prep phenom Sam McGuffie.

[...]

Ranked as the nation’s No. 1 all-purpose back by Rivals.com, McGuffie picked the Wolverines over Texas A&M, Southern California, Florida, Notre Dame and others.

CNN’s Larry Smith claims dog fighting charges worse than rape on air [∞]

Out to Larry Smith, CNN sports correspondent and CNN anchor. What’s Vick afraid of? Come on. He’s been in front of the camera a million times. What’s so hard about declaring your innocence?

SMITH: Yes, well, that’s — he’s been in a lot of trouble lately, when you think about all the other incidents, and this is just the worst one of all. Keep in mind, too, that while Kobe Bryant is a situation we can sort of compare this to, this really is much worse. Not only can you argue that the crimes are much worse in terms of, you know, killing dogs and that kind of thing, but as an NFL starting quarterback, you are the most visible face in that city. I’ve said all along, in fact, you know, if you go through and, you know, very quickly name 10 mayors of major cities in the country…

GRACE: Larry Smith, did I just hear you say…

SMITH: … you could have a harder time doing that…

GRACE: … mistreatment of…

SMITH: … than naming 10 NFL starting quarterbacks.

GRACE: Did I just hear Larry Smith, CNN sports correspondent and anchor, state that crimes on a dog are much worse than crimes on a woman? Did I hear that?

SMITH: I’m sorry. You — I’m saying they could be. I’m not arguing for which is worse, which one is worse. I’m just saying that in terms of his visibility is much worse. His visibility is much worse than what Kobe Bryant’s is. Kobe Bryant is a superstar in the NBA, but at the same time, he plays in Los Angeles, which is a city full of stars. Michael Vick is the most visible person in the city of Atlanta, maybe ever in the history of Atlanta sports.

What does ‘organic’ really mean? [∞]

According to USDA regulations, a product called “100 percent organic” must contain all organic ingredients. If the label just says “organic,” a processed food product can have up to 5 percent non-organic ingredients by weight — if those ingredients are on the USDA’s “national list” of approved non-organic ingredients.

Until last month, there were only five ingredients on the list: cornstarch, water-extracted gum, kelp, unbleached lecithin, and pectin. But the list just got longer and there’s quite a debate taking place as to whether this is good or bad for consumers.

On June 9th, the USDA added 38 non-organic ingredients to the national list: 19 food colorings, two starches, casings for sausages, hops, fish oil, chipotle chili pepper, gelatin, celery powder, dill weed oil, frozen lemon grass, and a sweetener called fructooligosaccharides.

Japanese schoolgirl watch: pervert-proof panties [∞]

For years, schoolgirls have had to be vigilant about jerks with cameras trying to get a panchira (panty-glimpse) up their skirts. But they have an even creepier problem now: Clever degenerates are modifying their videocam’s night-vision mode to see right through fabric, revealing all.

Facebook bankruptcy [∞]

Frankly I think folks are getting splintered by these social networks. You spend so much time checking off what you’ll do that you never do anything. Why waste your time talking about movies you’re going to watch when you haven’t even seen the classics, the 20 you have in your Netflix queue, and DVDs you’ve already BOUGHT?!?

This is the reason why I wrote a CSS script to disable all applications on Facebook. I can’t deal with all the spam they generate.

AMD announces FB-DIMM killer [∞]

AMD’s proposed solution, which it is developing in conjunction with memory makers IDT and Inphi, is called Socket G3 Memory Extender (G3MX). The new G3MX technology aims to give DDR3 the benefits of FB-DIMM’s advanced memory buffer (AMB)—higher capacity, higher bandwidth, and RAS—without the power consumption headaches, and without the need for specialized DIMMs. The basic premise is simple enough: take the buffers off of the individual DIMMs and place a single buffer on the motherboard. So you get many of the benefits of FB-DIMM, but with a number of other advantages thrown in.

FB-DIMM RAM is the reason why I’m holding back from buying the current version of the Mac Pro. This type of memory is more expensive than SDRAM, uses more power, and in some tests has performed slower. AMD’s upcoming DDR3 RAM revision sounds promising.
